Placement Opportunities and Volunteering

- Vacancies
- Professional Placements
- School work experience placements
- University placements
- Other volunteers

- Temporary Appointments (UCL Website)

Archaeology South-East provides placement opportunities for school and university students. As we cover a variety of aspects of archaeology from excavation to surveying to environmental and finds analysis, placement students will see a number of aspects of archaeology. Please note that we cannot provide transport or accommodation for any of these placements, and travel to and from the offices must be arranged by the student.

Vacancies
Archaeology South-East is midway through a period of planned expansion.

In the last two years we have invested in developing a range of new services (prehistoric and Roman ceramics, lithics, palaeobotanical analysis, geomatics, geophysics, quaternary studies, site interpretation, landscape characterisation, environmental impact assessment, etc).

We need to attract the best staff possible, and accordingly offer generous terms and conditions. We also aim to provide all staff with a first-class platform for gaining new skills, and for developing and publishing the results of their research. The real reason for joining us, however, is that you will be joining a lively team that is committed to meeting the highest standards in both contract and research archaeology. As a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology our staff have unparalleled access to a teaching and research projects, with opportunities for overseas work.

Please visit 'University College London Vacancies' to see our latest vacancies.

Professional Placements
ASE contributes to a series of programmes of professional placements, developing technical and professional skills within the workplace. Current and recent programmes include:

- EPPIC Placement in Archaeological Ceramics
- Traineeship in Historic Building Recording
- Graduate and Undergraduate Internships

If you wish to set up a similar programme, please contact the director of ASE Dominic Perring.

EPPIC Placement in Archaeological Ceramics

Archaeology South-East, hosted an EPPIC placement in archaeological ceramics in 2006-2007. EPPIC (English Heritage Professional Placements in Conservation) placements are the result of a partnership between English Heritage, IFA and IHBC.

The EPPIC scheme aims to address identified archaeological skills gaps, build capacity within the heritage sector and create opportunities for all sectors of the community to gain professional skills. The placements are designed for those with some experience of historic environment practice, but who have not yet had the opportunity to develop more specialist skills and competencies. Placements are structured around the National Occupational Standards in Archaeological Practice, enabling trainees to record evidence towards a vocational qualification.

Traineeship in Historic Building Recording

The English Heritage funded Rape of Hastings Architectural Survey which is due to start in 2007, will include a funded traineeship in Historic Building Recording and Interpretation. Work will focus on vernacular architecture of Sussex, and will take place within the Historic Environment Team of Archaeology South-East.

Graduate and Undergraduate Internships within Archaeology South-East

ASE both organises and hosts student internships, principally for students undertaking graduate courses at the Institute of Archaeology (e.g. the MA in Field Archaeology) but it can also provide in-service training programmes for students of other Universities where there are suitable opportunities. We are particularly keen to explore exchange opportunities.

School work experience placements
Each year we provide a limited number of one-week placement opportunities for local school children, giving them an insight into a number of aspects of commercial archaeology. As well as an introduction to working in the field, the students will also learn about archaeological illustration and have an opportunity to try archaeological finds processing. These placements are very popular and offered on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you are contemplating a career in archaeology, a useful guide can be found at http://www.archaeology.co.uk/further/begin/jobs.htm

University placements
We actively encourage university student placements at Archaeology South-East, and take students for placements that last from a couple of weeks up to six or more months. We aim for this to give the students valuable experience in commercial archaeology as well as the opportunity to learn practical skills. These placements are limited, but please contact Charlotte Thompson and we will try to arrange a placement that builds upon your skills and interests. We also provide longer internships as part of the MA in Field Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology.

Other volunteers
Where possible, we seek to provide volunteer opportunities for interested members of the public. These are dependent upon suitable work and supervision being available, so please contact us to see if there are any opportunities.
