Forensic Archaeology

Archaeology South-East employs a full time forensic archaeologist who has more than ten years’ professional experience, and whose skills have been utilised by police forces around the country. She is CRFP registered and a member of the Forensic Search Advisory Group (FSAG).

The forensic archaeologist has been involved with an increasing variety of cases ranging from simple bone identifications to high profile murder investigations with court appearances as an expert witness. She has provided assistance with the search and location of graves and other areas of clandestine activity and been involved with the recovery of both surface and buried human remains.

The use of a forensic archaeologist ensures that all necessary guidelines are followed and that professional standards are maintained.

Bone identification
Archaeology South-East offers a rapid identification service to police forces needing to know quickly whether or not any bone fragments are human or animal in origin. In most instances this simply involves a quick visual assessment but can be accompanied by a scientific report or statement as necessary.

Search and Location
Staff from Archaeology South-East have assisted with both the setting up and implementing of searches for clandestine graves. They are able to offer advice on the appropriateness of various scientific search techniques and carry out geophysical surveys where necessary. They are also experienced at working successfully alongside specialist groups within the police force such as POLSA, underwater search and police dog teams.

Crime Scene Work
Once a clandestine grave has been located a forensic archaeologist can help to ensure that all potential evidence is retained and that the maximum amount of evidence and information can be gleaned from the crime scene. Our staff have experience in clandestine grave excavation and recording, utilising scientific methodologies for accuracy and precision. This both maximises the recovery of evidence whilst ensuring that it’s integrity is maintained. The forensic archaeologist is experienced at working with other forensic specialists such as entomologists, environmental profilers and pathologists. It is through successful team work that the best results are achieved.

Reporting
The forensic archaeologist is experienced at providing both accurate and expert police reports and professionally prepared reports on the archaeological findings and skeletal analysis.
